After leaving Asimov's Science Fiction in 2004, and after editing dozens and dozens of reprint anthologies for three decades, Gardner Dozois turned to substantial original anthologies beginning 2007. Almost all were co-edited with others. They include two on "new space opera" with Jonathan Strahan, two on fantasy themes with Jack Dann, and seven large books on various themes with George R.R. Martin. Some of these latter attracted non-genre authors seldom noted for short fiction (Diana Gabaldon, Cecelia Holland, James Rollins). Two books invited authors to set stories on knowingly obsolete versions of the planets Mars and Venus, as they had been imagined decades before. The final anthologies were edited by Dozois alone.
(Other originals from this period includes three compiled on the "Tribute Anthologies" page.)
Most frequent authors: Garth Nix (7), Joe R. Lansdale (6), then Diana Gabaldon, Cecelia Holland, Matthew Hughes, George R.R. Martin, and Carrie Vaughn (5 each).
