The increasingly ambitious anthologies of the VanderMeers -- all but one of these titles are edited by both Ann and Jeff VanderMeer -- explore interstitial genres and the far reaches of traditional genres. Thus the early volumes include essays and roundtables to discuss the origins of steampunk or the meaning of "new weird," while later anthologies, like the two Big Books (a third is forthcoming), range across world literature for unfamiliar examples of their genres, some stories translated into English for the first time. The Big Book of Science Fiction especially includes a lengthy introduction re-evaluating the concept of SF, as well as a substantial introduction to each story assessing the author's history and significance to the field.
Most reprinted authors: Jeffrey Ford, Tanith Lee, and Zitkala-èa (5 each, the last with a quintet of related tales in Classic Fantasy), then William Gibson and Michael Moorcock (4 each).
Contents are taken from isfdb, omitting many details about translators, original titles, and forms of the authors' names. See the isfdb links for these details.
